This one’s from the archives and not spoiler-free.

When Warner Bros announced the Wonder Woman movie, so many fans were dying to find out if the first film dedicated to the hero of love, justice, and kindness would do her, well, justice.

Meet Summer

Summer, my friend from the International Geek Girl Pen Pals club, is one of the biggest Wonder Woman fans I know. Summer poked me right away. She had to be on the episode of Common Room where we review the Wonder Woman movie, and so here we are.

Who is Wonder Woman?

I was not familiar with the character at all. I didn’t know about her lasso of truth, her birthplace or birth manner, or even her real name. The only thing I knew about Wonder Woman came from a Family Guy bit that had to do with her invisible plane. :/

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was my first introduction to Diana Prince and Wonder Woman. Summer also chatted with me about that film with our friend Meghan. You can find that episode here.

Fun fact: when I was searching for photos to place in this post, I stumbled across Meghan cosplayed as Ms. Prince with non-other-than Patty Jenkins, the director of Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984. Meghan is second from the right in the middle, right next to Patty Jenkins.

Show Notes

  • Lots of spoilers.
  • Did Wonder Woman meet everyone’s expectations, hopes, and dreams?
  • How did Gal Gadot, a relative unknown, do as this monumental heroine?
  • What makes a good villain story?
  • Was the movie absent of a male gaze?
  • Wonder Woman’s creator

If you’re interested in learning more about how Wonder Woman came to be, check out The Secret History of Wonder Woman. It was a super quick read full of very interesting backstory. William Marston, Wonder Woman’s creator, was also the subject of a recent film called Professor Marston and the Wonder Women.
