Food MoonmanHADAS:
Expertise: Intermediate
Ease: I didn’t get to do what I was going for, so I would have to say hard.
Customizing: My mother buys loads of kitchen and home tools and items often. She saves some for me in a box in our garage. Included in this box is a set of food decorating tools! I wish I had them, but a knife worked ok.
Repeatability: Hope to get my hands on the tools and try again when we do another edible presentation challenge. I was going for an MTV VMA Moonman/Neil Armstrong, but this one worked out okay, I guess. #foodfail

VANESSA:
Expertise
: Beginner
Ease: Shockingly easy
Customizing:  “Healthy Brownie Granola Bars”
from ‘Minimalist Baker‘. I don’t like pecans, so I used cashews. Other than that, I stuck to the recipe.  Also if you don’t like dates or can’t find them, the authors mentioned you can use any dried fruit, like raisins. Realistic “space food” needs to be nutrient dense (high protein, fat), zero/low gravity tolerant, and hopefully tastes good – because on extended stays on ISS or space travel, you can’t just stop at Milliways for a burger.  These “brownies” are perfect (for an Earth breakfast too).
Repeatability: Absolutely! The downside is the price of the nuts can be initially spendy – but you can get several batches out of them. I bought my supplies at Trader Joe’s, which brought down the cost.

nutrition food health dietMelissa’s Nutritional Tidbit: Nuts are one of the healthiest foods you can eat. It doesn’t really matter what kind nut you eat, as long as you’re eating them! There are a number of factors that make nuts so healthy. The unsaturated fats and plant sterols in them can lower your bad cholesterol, aka LDL cholesterol, if you incorporate them into your daily diet. LDL cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease. The vitamin E in nuts can prevent plaque development in your arteries. Plaque narrows the blood flow in your arteries, increasing blood pressure and possibly leading to coronary artery disease. Last but not least, the fiber in nuts can also lower cholesterol and keep you full, helping you eat less and potentially maintain a healthy weight.

marshmallow alienscharee_circleCHAREE:
Expertise: Intermediate
Ease: VERY easy
Customizing: I don’t like white chocolate so I used dark chocolate, but that made them harder to decorate. I thought I had certain icings at home that would help me make the aliens more cute, but I didn’t. So I improvised with what I had and I hate the way they turned out. They tasted pretty good though! Haha!
Repeatability: No! This was a FOOD FAIL! If I do this again, I’ll make them look like the Toy Story aliens and just not eat any. I really don’t like white chocolate. These little guys looks so ugly but I can’t help but laugh at them.

Here is the site with the original Marshmallow Aliens.
