I had never seen any Mission Impossible movies, nor been interested in it, before one of my friends invited me to the premiere of the latest installment Rogue Nation. I, of course, watched the third and fourth movies immediately, ignoring the first two on her advice. I absolutely loved them and was pumped for the last one! I wasn’t disappointed, Rogue Nation is incredible entertainment!
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is back in action and is being targeted by a secret organization called the Syndicate. After a mission gone bad, he becomes a fugitive and has to break down this rogue organization with the help of his most loyal friends.
What a show! Tom Cruise knows how to get an audience running. With each new movie, it gets better and better. It’s basically great entertainment, you don’t have to think hard as to what is going on and it’s non-stop action. I mean, from the very first scene you know what to expect from the rest. Tom Cruise is strapped to a plane ascending to the sky. For real. The fact that he does most of his stunts is impressive to say the least.
Tom Cruise does get better with age! Cause seriously, when I watch old movies with him, my eyes bleed – I’m sorry, Top Gun is a classic, but it’s atrocious. Those last few years I feel like he improved as an action actor and I’m all for it!
Talking about actors with more action roles, Simon Pegg, aka Benji Dunn, got a promotion in Rogue Nation and way more screen time, which made me very happy. He’s completely caricatural and the cliché comic relief sidekick, but I was just happy he didn’t die (spoiler alert). Seriously, I had a bad vibe halfway through the film, as if he wasn’t gonna make it, but fortunately he’s still fine by the end. I’m still surprised he gets such big roles in American movies, but he’s always awesome, even if he doesn’t really renew his spectrum of characters.
The newest, and most awesomest, addition to the team is the gorgeous Rebecca Ferguson as the British double agent Ilsa Faust. Even if she’s controlled by British intelligence and all, she’s a strong woman who takes no hell from no one. I like that she took some situations in her hands and left everyone confused as to what had just happened. Plus, she’s absolutely gorgeous and a very skilled actress (you should watch BBC’s The White Queen if you haven’t).
But let’s face it, Mission Impossible, in general, is still ridiculous. If they were going to be completely realistic, Ethan would have been dead a long time ago – that scene under water, come on. But I guess it’s those little moments of ridiculousness that makes it so great. In all honesty, they don’t take themselves too seriously: they joke during big action scenes, they openly give ridiculous names to important objects etc… it’s hilarious. It’s what makes its charm and appeal, even if it’s too much at times.
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation is a must see if you loved the previous ones or crave awesome action filled movies and excitement. That’s really what I call GREAT entertainment!
