Larissa’s Music Picks of 2014

And another year has gone by. Time goes by way too fast. Anyway, 2014 brought me some fantastic music and therefore I’d love to share my personal top 5 with you! They’re all out of my weekly picks. What were your favourites?

5. Bullet Train by Gardens & Villa

That bass line hasn’t let me go since I heard this song for the first time. Kind of makes me want to learn bass!

4. Drowning by BANKS

This song probably started my recent obsession with vocal samples. I love how they can make a song instantly sound dark and sinister. Favourite line from the song: “I’m the one who had to learn to build a heart made of armour.”

3. Hunger of the Pine – Alt-J

Another one that fascinates me with its use of samples, layered sounds and slow build ups. It’s my alarm in the morning to this day. I also like the armour imagery in the lyrics “In my stomach, for my heart, chain mail” – “Bedding with me you see at night, your heart wears knight armour.” (I’ve probably played too many RPGs and watched too much Game of Thrones in my lifetime).

2. Uncertainty – Jagwar Ma

To be honest, had I not seen this band live twice I would probably not have listened to this song more than once. But they were so unbelievably good both times, putting the audience into a frenzied trance, that I absolutely love this song now.

1. Lofticries – Purity Ring

My absolute favourite this year. It has and does everything I aspire for my own music; it’s ethereal yet dark, has shockingly clever lyrics and, of course, vocal samples. I’m so happy I (re)discovered this band and I can’t wait for them to tour again.

These were my favourites, let’s look at the Common Room team!

Charee: Maps – Maroon 5 & Blank Space – Taylor Swift
Lindsey: Stay Alive – Jose Gonzalez
Hadas: I’m Going In- Drake
