#Fandom5: Games I Love to Play

Gaming has been a big part of my life for a long time now. My dad got me started on Baulder’s Gate 2 when he first bought it, and then on EverQuest when it came out. I was 12 at the time of EQ, but my dad made sure to sit nearby and he always helped me. Basically, he was turning me into a gamer like himself (he started with the very first Dungeons and Dragons rulebook). Shortly after introducing me to EverQuest, he learned more about this female-led video game with a woman who raided tombs and was pretty kick-butt. And this where my love of video games really kicked in and has been there ever since.
For this Fandom5, I am talking a look at the top 5 games I love to play, and I am pretty excited.

1. Tomb Raider

This game has been my all time favorite since 1999 when I first played it. All of the “approved for kids” games really annoyed me and I didn’t want to spend my time playing them, and so my dad introduced me to this. The appearance of video game characters is a major thing right now, especially females, and often Lara Croft is brought up as a “bad” example of a female video game character and costume. However, as a young 12-year-old, I didn’t see Lara as something that all women had to look like. What I saw was a woman who was confident in who she was, wore what she wanted, and raided tombs, solved puzzles, etc. because she wanted to. Not everyone’s perception, but it was definitely my 12-year-old mind’s perception. I still love Lara today and have played every single game except for the one only available on the X-Box store. I loved the reboot, and I am itching for the new one coming out at the end of this year!

2. Dragon Age

Let’s move on to a “newer” game – Dragon Age. Goodness, I adore this video game series. It is so fun, and I love any and all fantasy stories. Thedas has a rich storyline and history, and each game has an incredible story, too. I absolutely loved Dragon Age: Inquisition, mainly because it was incredibly put together. Though, Origins will remain my favorite simply because it reminded me of Baulder’s Gate 2. Although, any game I play now seems so short thanks to Inquisition. You can possibly beat it in 60 hours of gameplay, but realistically, it is closer to 100 hours or more. Such a large game! I’m also a major Varric fangirl, and I am not ashamed. That guy.

3. Mass Effect

Oh look, another BioWare game! Mass Effect is a really fun game and perfect if you like science fiction based games. Out of DA and ME, I think Mass Effect is more of a favorite, but it sometimes changes depending on which part of DA I’m at. Anywho, this game is incredible and has some powerful storylines as well. Each follows the same, continuous storyline where as Dragon Age doesn’t, which makes a more solid connection with the characters and the main, epic problem the galaxy is facing. You get the chance to play nice, neutral, or just plain sassy/angry, which I do quite enjoy! I am going through a new playthrough of the whole series and am remembering just why this game is so great. And just like with Dragon Age, there is a character I am a major fangirl of – Garrus.

4. Gloom

The only non-digital game on this list! Gloom is a fun card game that is pretty “depressing” and “dark” to some. It’s a really fun game where you want as many negative points as possible, and instead of just putting cards down, you have to tell a story while you play. This is really fun and I wish I had more people to play it with. I have two versions: original and Lovecraftian. FUN! Do you play this card game?

 5. World of Warcraft

I haven’t played this in ages simply because it takes so much time and I also no longer have an active account, but that’s OK! It is still a favorite and I think that is primarily because I started due to EverQuest. I love this game, and something that I really enjoyed was playing with friends or even joining up with my mom or dad for a few hours. Yep, my parents play WoW, too. Actually, they play way more than me and still have active accounts. I always played Blood Elf, until the werewolf/Worgen aspect came about, and, gosh, I love the Worgens. If you couldn’t tell already, I love fantasy and I love dark, so combining werewolves/Worgens with the fantasy element of WoW was pretty perfect for me.

Well, that does it for this week’s Fandom Five! I hope you enjoyed the games I listed.
