Voiceover 101 with Daree Allen, Voiceover Artist and Life Coach

Play

Daree Allen is a professional voice actor and a genuinely great conversationalist. I really enjoyed speaking to her about everything from being yourself to her detailed voiceover 101 tips. I especially enjoyed learning about how female voices are preferred in voiceover!

Some of Darees Voiceover 101 Dos and Don’ts:

  1. DON’T If you’re serious about this, stay away from sites like Fiverr that let people pay you an insufficient amount for the hard work you’re doing. Just because you’re doing something that can be done at home, doesn’t mean it’s not a real job that requires a skill.
  2. DO Invest in a few courses, coaching, and conferences.
  3. DON’T record your own demo. Have a professional put together your demo reel.
  4. DO Familiarize yourself with all the different types of voice work: promo, trailers, animation, eLearning, IVR (interactive voice response/phone trees or automated voice responses you use on customer service calls), documentaries, commercial (political, PSAs, beauty, medical…), radio imaging (radio promos), and more. Once you start booking gigs, you’ll find out what you’re great at and you can stick to those fields.
  5. DO Check out voice123 when you’re ready to book some gigs. You can start out with the free plan and get the paid plan when you’re ready.

Daree was really a delight to chat with and I hope to do it again. If you want more of the voiceover 101 or would like to hire Daree, check out her official voiceover site.

You know I like to go deep sometimes. We started this episode talking about line dancing suddenly started talking about how getting comfortable with who you are is the secret to success.
