Party Food Staples

For F3: Episode 5 the Superbowl took over our kitchens so the format has been thrown out the window! We’re crazy!

Listen in to hear about our party food staples:

Cindy:

BBQ Sauce 1

As she’s unfortunately allergic to so many different things, Cindy got super crafty and made her own delicious BBQ wings sauce.

Ingredients:

  • tomato purée
  • red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • cayenne pepper
  • oregano
  • garlic
  • salt
  • brown sugar
  • honey
  • sugar
  • a little water to loosen the tomato.

Measurements: Yeah, Cindy just wings it. (Get it, wings? #dadjoke)

Directions: Heat it for a few minutes until it looks even and pour it on the wing and cook them for like 30 minutes or so.

nutrition food health dietMelissa’s Nutritional Tidbit: LOVE the homemade BBQ sauce! Conventional BBQ sauce is loaded with salt, sugar, fat, contributing close to no nutritional value to your meal. The ingredients in Cindy’s sauce can be modified to make it healthier, making your meal healthier!

I would like to put a spotlight on red wine for this tidbit. Everyone associates red wine with alcohol (which it is), implying negative implications from its consumption. While it should be consumed responsibly and in moderation, red wine actually has health benefits. It contains resveratrol, an antioxidant that may prevent damage to the lining of your blood vessels, prevent blood clots, and lower your LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein or ” bad cholesterol”). The resveratrol in red wine is found in the grape skins. Since red wine is fermented with its grape skins longer than white wine, there is more resveratrol. However, more studies need be conducted in order to be deemed conclusive. If you would like to try to reap the benefits of red wine, 5 ounces of wine daily is deemed moderate consumption.

Hadas:

You’ll always find potato salad at an Israeli shindig. This is how Hadas likes hers:

Ingredients:

  • Russet Potatoes- boiled- make sure they are cooked, but not too soft!
  • Israeli Pickles- loads, sliced
  • Mayonnaise
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Optional: diced carrots, peas, and hardboiled eggs

Let potatoes cool a bit, mix together, and enjoy!

Vansessa:

VanessaSB

V hosted a Super Bowl party at her casa. Check out her incredible spread!
Vanessa’s gotta have a good guacamole and chip plate at her parties. You really can’t go wrong when making guac, but V likes this mix:

Ingredients:

  • avocados
  • lime juice
  • onions
  • jalapeno or serrano peppers
  • garlic, & cilantro

OR she combines pico de gayo (tomatoes, cilantro, limes, onions) aka Poor Man’s Guac and avocados
OR she just buys Whole Foods original flavor.
