I didn’t want to see Mad Max. I thought “this is not my kind of action movie, I’m definitely not gonna like it.” Well, I’m an idiot. Mad Max: Fury Road is awesome (and a little bit ridiculous at times, but I’ll come back to that). We follow two main characters, Max and Furiosa, who both share a common interest in survival. When Immortan Joe, the local tyrant, decides to hunt down Furiosa and his five wives after they escaped, the car race for survival begins.
What a rush! 2 hours long, not a moment to breathe, and definitely not as dumb as I thought it would be. Quite the opposite actually. Mad Max: Fury Road is a great example of why women should definitely be the center of more action movies. Yes, I’m looking at you Marvel and other studios incapable of seeing all the potential there is here.
It’s what got me into seeing it in the first place, the enormous amount of reviews and praises surrounding this surprisingly women-centered movie. What I particularly liked is that Furiosa, the main character, is fighting for herself and is not driven by anything else than her own will. She is seeking a place of peace, her birthplace, surrounded by women she used to know. She was raised by women, got kidnapped and then learned to survive by becoming a warrior by herself and for herself -and eventually for other women.
All the women are so incredibly well played and represented here, going from young to old. They are bold and unapologetic. It felt so liberating to witness those women, living in that very hostile world and see them eventually saying, we’ve had enough and we want to live free, and taking the matter into their own hands. Needless to say that I was incredibly excited throughout the story, and I may be reading into it too much, but the best part was how Max just fades away to let the women strive. It’s not something that we see too often in this genre and, yep, it feels amazing.
But apart from the amazing feminist and egalitarian messages scattered through Mad Max: Fury Road, it’s also a great entertainment, with an incredible aesthetic and great actors.
The cinematography is just so cool and impressive. I really wouldn’t like to be caught in that massive sandstorm. Those accelerated shots that made me think about some Benny Hill scenes where everyone is running everywhere gave such a great dynamic and rhythm to the action scenes. Sometimes, it feels like it’s a bit too much and you don’t know where to look because everything is just going so fast! Also, some elements are ridiculous like they have a car only for drum and guitars … or that one guy that pulls out his tooth and uses it as a bullet. I’ll admit it made me laugh a lot.
However, that’s not really a criticism, that’s mostly me being me, even if I thoroughly enjoyed Mad Max: Fury Road, it was a little bit too fast-paced for my own taste. I had to close my eyes a couple of times, just to rest them, and I didn’t see the film in 3D.
Mad Max: Fury Road had me on the edge of my seat, rooting for those women. I’ll go see the sequel in a heartbeat! I really hope it’s going to be the beginning of more equal representation of women in action movies, one where men and women are on the same level.
