Hadas on Joy Sandwich Podcast

I had a blast with Non and Jessica, the husband and wife super team who host Joy Sandwich. The podcast is about things that bring you joy! The episode they invited me to be on was all about gaming.

(Check out more of their episodes or Non’s new podcast, You, Me, Empathy!)

We discussed:

  • society’s view on gaming/gamers
  • the difference between gaming as a kid and as an adult
  • our favorite old school games
  • what we’re playing now
  • and why games bring us joy!

I recently re-listened to this episode and really enjoyed it. Non and Jessica are so welcoming and just easy to chat with.

My favorite old school games:

Glider

As I mentioned on the episode, this game came with our Mac when I was younger. I was never able to win. It did come out when I was 3 though, so I think it’s ok that I couldn’t beat the game just yet. :) I think I may try to find it and master it once and for all.

Descent

This game came on our Performa Mac as a demo. I recently purchased it on GOG when I heard the updated version for newer systems was available. I still play once in a while and have not yet completed it. So much nostalgia and actual fear as the enemies turn up suddenly when I’m low on Shield and about to be blown to smithereens.

Some of the music is still in my head. I can’t find the track, but there is one specific bit of music that Florence and the Machine’s Remain Nameless reminds me of.

My favorite current games:

Portal

I loved this puzzle game. It had a beautifully simple design and pretty challenging scenarios. There are so many memes that come out of this world and so much desire for a third installment we are likely to never ever see.

World of Warcraft

What can I say about World of Warcraft that I haven’t already? Based on a search of this site, I may have a lot more to say. I’ll remedy that soon enough. :) For now, here’s the trailer/cinematic for my favorite expansion of the MMORPG.
