Sunburn Relief

In this month’s Cloud Nine we’ll be discussing the best tips I’ve found for Sunburn Relief:

It happens to the best of us…you’re in a hurry or having too much fun and forget to apply sunscreen. Or you just can’t find one you like! (Psst check out our picks from our Sun Care Beauty Bits on F3 (food, fitness, fashion) Episode 13) Now you’ve got sunburn but what next? There’s no need to suffer in silence! Follow these tips to ease the burn & even reduce peeling:

   1. Ibuprofen

Once you realize you’re burnt, take some over-the-counter Ibuprofen. I use the store brand, but Advil or Motrin will work too. The medication helps ease the inflammation caused by the burn & can also reduce the pain.

    2. Water…Lots & Lots of Water

This won’t be the last time I stress the importance of being well hydrated. Proper hydration is crucial for over all well-being but in this situation it is key in helping your skin repair itself. If you start to peel increase your water intake to give your skin the added fuel it needs to heal.

Aloe Vera gel has natural anti-inflammatory substances that help ease the sting of the burn while reducing damage to the skin. You can get Aloe gel straight from the plant or in a variety of over-the-counter gels & creams. Some of these products even contain a numbing agent that can temporarily dull the burning sensation.

    4. Tea

Not to drink, but for your bath water. Tea contains tannic acid which pulls the heat out of the sunburn & helps balance the pH level of your skin. Just add a few tea bags (black or green tea works best) to your bath water & have yourself a relaxing soak in the tub. You can also create a compress by dipping a clean cloth in some lukewarm tea or using the wet tea bags for more targeted relief.

    5. Moisturize

Sunburn pulls the moisture from the skin as it heals. So it’s important to put that moisture back. Moisturizers that contain plant based oils as opposed to mineral based oils work best because they allow the skin to better absorb the nutrients it needs to heal. Noxzema cold cream is actually my favorite moisturizer when I have sunburn. In fact it was originally developed to be used as a sunburn treatment & offers a wonderful cooling sensation to sooth the burn while adding the moisture your skin needs to heal.

There are probably as many home remedies for sunburn as there are people have gotten it. This is just a handful. Why not share your sunburn relief tips in the comments below?
