Best Music of 2015: New Releases and Recent Discoveries

Here it is, the end of the year! It came quick and I can’t believe it’s over already. At least, it had some great music! Here is our Best Music of 2015!

bestof2015 best music of 2015 songs albumsThis month I am revisiting my favourite songs of the year and I will also tell you a bit more about them. Finally I will show you what the Common Room team listened to this year! Listen to the playlist while you read (it’s embedded at the bottom of this page too)!

LARISSA’S BEST MUSIC OF 2015

7. Marina and The Diamonds – How To Be A Heartbreaker
I chose this song instead of Fear and Loathing which I featured in my September Music of the Month because it also had an impact on me this year. Fear and Loathing reminds me of the flight back from Florida and How To Be A Heartbreaker makes me think back to all the time we spent in the car over there!

6. The Wombats – Be Your Shadow
What a banger. Unfortunately, I missed out on their latest Liverpool gig because of my accident but I saw this live earlier in the year and it was great. It’s so very Wombats and so different at the same time. Next to Curveballs my favourite from Glitterbug!

5. CHVRCHES – Clearest Blue
I haven’t known this one for very long but it has to be one of my favourites. It’s so full of positive energy, unlike other CHVRCHES songs. The others have a dark, brooding type of energy but Clearest Blue just makes me want to shake my booty to be honest.

4. Foals – Mountain At My Gates
Foals have changed so much but apart from Total Life Forever I’ve liked every direction they’ve taken so far. Even with my moving away from guitar-driven music I’ll always go back to Foals.

3. Big Data – Big Dater
Another one of the Florida lot. We played this one a lot. It’s one of my friends’ favourites and now it’s also one of mine.

2. Filthy Dukes – This Rhythm
This has stayed a favourite since I found it. I love the glitchy, choppy vocals. When I grow up I want to be able to do that, too (I’m still learning a lot of music stuff and this is high on my list).

1. Purity Ring – bodyache
I don’t even know what to say about this one, it stands for an absolutely amazing album and one of my favourite bands. Their arrangements and lyrics are both flawless.

I’m old so I’m not fast on new music. I haven’t listened to the entire Adele album yet but Hello is awesome. Adele’s voice is just insane.

The one album I would say I loved is Sound & Color by Alabama Shakes (my favorite songs are Don’t Wanna Fight, Dunes, Guess Who and The Greatest). Brittany Howard’s vocals you feel in your bones. I have heard a gritty rock band with a blues feel like that in years. And she is just insanely talented.

I love the new Adele album, my favorite songs are Hello and Water Under The Bridge. I’ve been discovering a lot of new songs thanks to Spotify. Two big favorites of mine right now are Barton Hallow by The Civil Wars and Wait So Long by Trampled By Turtles. OH and Dearly Departed by Shakey Graves!

I find most of my music from tv or movies so I’m not sure how new it is but I’m loving Renegades by X Ambassadors. My friends The Jellybricks released an album called Youngstown Tune-Up which (I think) is awesome! My favorite from that album is About the Weekend.

I’ve mostly been into musicals this year (like most years as a matter of fact… XD), so yeah I’d say my favorite cast albums this year are Hamilton, Finding Neverland, Fun Home, and It Shoulda Been You! But I’m waiting for The Hunchback of Notre Dame and School of Rock that will be released soon!
I’ve rediscovered Alela Diane as well, I’ve always been a huge fan and I got to see a private showcase of her’s this year and fell in love all over again! There are also albums that never leave my side, I always listen to at least one song every day (but again, it’s mostly musicals)!

From the cast albums I mentioned, Play is my favorite in Finding Neverland, Maps & Telephone Wire for Fun Home, Whatever from It Shoulda Been You and every single song from Hamilton! My favorite song by Alela Diane is White As Diamonds, because it reminds me of Canada a lot.

As for songs/albums I listen to very very often at the moment, There’s Into the Heights (almost every day since 2008), The Crying Scene from Murder Ballad, Prologue / Pierre / No One Else from Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, What Do You Call a Man Like That? from Bridges of Madison County, Like it Was & Franklin Shepard Inc from Merrily We Roll Along, and, a non-musical song, All My Days by Alexi Murdoch! (There’s more, but these are the core of it!)

I have kind of put music on the back burner this year, but a couple songs that I have loved this year are A Great Big World‘s Hold Each Other and Jason Derulo‘s Want to Want Me.

I haven’t heard many new artists or songs this year. However, the one song I did hear and really loved is, I Shall Rise by Karen O from Tomb Raider (I’m so predictable).

My best music of 2015 is probably one song: Writing’s On the Wall by Sam Smith. I’m not a huge Sam Smith fan but when I saw Spectre using it in the gorgeous intro, I thought it fit so well and I kept wanting to listen to it over and over again

I tried my best to narrow this down:
Drake: All Me, Florence And The Machine: Which Witch, Metallica: Broken, Beaten, Scarred, Omer Adam: Mode Ani, Regga Twins: Bad Man- Skrillex Remix, Girls Aloud: On the Metro, EXO-K: Mama, and Alvin Risk and Hans Zimmer – Electro Suite Remix. If you’re on Spotify let’s make a playlist together!

I wasn’t sure what to list as the best music of 2015 because my favorite changes monthly. Right now I love Oh Wonder‘s Lose It. I just want to dance.
