A Musical Love Affair Renewed: #Metallica- Playlist Picks

This one is a throwback! I recently rediscovered Metallica. I’m not sure how it happened, but there are no complaints here!

When I was about 12 years old I had a huge crush on my friend’s older brother. To be honest, I almost always had a crush on one of my friend’s brothers… it was a bit too easy. :) He was a big fan of KRock, so I started listening too. Thank goodness because I started to fall in love with rock, metal, classic rock, and the great energy of those genres. Not to mention the fantastic melody work.

My favorite rock songs or interpretations depend on the singer’s tone, specifically when the singer uses his or her real voice instead of the rock yell, vocal fry, or scratchiness that has become the stamp of a wannabe rocker. James Hetfield’s tone is so pure and strong. He has a bit of scratchiness, but I never see him overplay it. Maybe because Metallica is so iconic that I don’t realize or maybe it’s because I feel he is allowed to adopt those vocal filters. :)

Here are my recent top tracks:

Wherever I May Roam: Current favorite because of the wonderful Eastern sound and the fact that I now work at a travel site makes the lyrics super relevant! :)

Broken, Beaten & Scarred: Has some dark turns, but the melody is fantastic and so fun to sing. The message is empowering too “You rise, you fall, you’re down and you rise again, what don’t kill you makes you more strong!”

Enter Sandman: A classic with some great storytelling aspects.

Nothing Else Matters: This acoustic version with Chris Isaak is my favorite. I love how soulful it is here (wait until the laughter dies down).

I Disappear: My first known Metallica song. :)

Ride the Lightning: That guitar… /swoon
