20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2015

Black Mass

A new biopic is set to come out this year and it’s Black Mass, depicting the life of criminal Whitey Bulger. Johnny Depp will be portraying Whitey Bulger, and Joel Edgerton will portray police officer John Connelly, set to arrest Bulger, then godfather of the Irish Mob. And what a cast! Corey Stroll, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Peter Sarsgaard, Juno Temple, Adam Scott, Sierra Miller etc… It’s a talent-filled movie, directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart), there’s no reason not to be excited about Black Mass.

Victor Frankenstein

For some reason, I feel like I’ve been waiting for Victor Frankenstein for quite some time. I remember seeing pictures of the set back in 2013, thinking it would come out in 2014. It didn’t, but it will next October, finally. In Victor Frankenstein we will be following Igor’s point of view on Frankenstein (James McAvoy) and his process to create the creature. I really much like that idea, to know more about Igor than Frankenstein himself. The cast is amazing, and we’ll be able to see Mark Gatiss, Andrew Scott, Jessica Brown-Findlay, Louise Brealey and Daniel Mays. Mary Shelley’s book is one of my favourite to read so I’m always happy to see the industry is still making adaptations out of it!

Directed By Paul McGuigan. October 2nd.

Chappie

Chappie (Sharlto Copley in Motion Capture) is a robot with incredibly humanistic motions and emotions. He can think, talk and do anything like a human. We’ll watch him grow, and change the world as well as change the relationship that humans have with robots. Chappie looks very promising; the trailer looks amazing, and it’s quite an original movie. Sure, it’s not the first robot movie, but there’s something quite particular about Chappie that draws me to it. Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, and Sigourney Weaver will all help (or won’t help) the little robot grow and learn. Definitely worth a trip to the movie theatre.

Directed by Neill Blomkamp. March 6th.

Tomorrowland

Brad Bird is back with a new movie, Tomorrowland. It is based on one of the lands in Disneyland called Tomorrowland (lots of lands aren’t there?). There’s never really been an explanation for this land, and Brad Bird decided to give us one. We’ll follow Casey Newton (Britt Robertson) and Frank Walker (George Clooney) into the discovery of a land that seems to exist only in their collective memory. Hugh Laurie, Judy Greer, Kathryn Hahn and Tim McGraw are all part of the cast. I’m 100% confident about Tomorrowland, it’s Brad Bird and it’s co-written by Damon Lindelof. There’s nothing I can’t like about that.

Directed by Brad Bird. May 22nd.

Pixels

The synopsis sounds completely ridiculous, but all I can say is YES! Pixels is the story of how video game nerds are going to help the military fight off alien-controlled retro games that are attacking New York. Part of me is worried because I don’t really like Adam Sandler and Kevin James’ humor or acting, but the main part of me is so excited because guess who’s playing two of those video game nerds? Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad. I cannot begin to explain how the thought of those two as a duo is making me so happy. Ashley Benson, Michelle Monaghan, and Sean Bean are also part of the cast. Let’s just hope that this time, Sean Bean is going to live!

Ricki & the Flash

Ever since I saw some set pictures of Ricki & The Flash last October, showing a punk rock Meryl Streep, I knew I needed to have that movie in my life. We follow the  story of a rock star (Streep), who pursued her dreams instead of taking care of her family, and who’s now given a second chance to reconnect with her children (Mamie Gummer & Sebastian Stan). The cast is simply amazing, composed of Stan, Gummer (Streep’s real-life daughter), Streep, Kevin Kline and Ben Platt, and I’m very curious to see how they work as a group. Plus, Diablo Cody is the writer. You can be sure I’ll be the first one in line when it comes out. A trailer is yet to be released.

Woman in Gold

(Take a breath) Tatiana Maslany, Daniel Brühl, Helen Mirren, Charles Dance, Elizabeth McGovern and Ryan Reynolds all together in a film based on the story of Maria Altmann and how she filled a lawsuit against Austria to recollect the paintings of her Aunt Adele Bloch-Bauer by the painter Gustav Klint, because they had been stolen from her family during the Second World War? Great actors, art and history, you can count me in!

Directed by Simon Curtis. April 3rd.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a movie I love, and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a movie I’m sure I’m going to love just as much. The jolly bunch of the first movie is back, and Sonny (Dev Patel) has big dreams for the future of the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful. New addition to the cast counts Richard Gere and Tamsin Creig, who are going to shake things up a little bit. I cannot wait to see it!

Directed by John Madden. March 6th.

The Lady in the Van

Based on the play by Alan Bennett, The Lady in the Van is the real story of Miss Shepherd (Maggie Smith), living in her old broken van, who after parking it in Alan Bennett’s driveway, is going to develop an unlikely friendship with him (Alex Jennings). This little British film, starring James Corden, Dominic Cooper, Jim Broadbent and Roger Allam, looks to me like another touching movie that I’m going to love (in the style of Philomena). It’s always a pleasure to see such great actors coming together for a film.

Directed by Nicholas Hytner. November 13th.

Suffragette

Another Meryl Streep movie I’m really waiting for this year is Suffragette, depicting the struggle to obtain women’s rights in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Meryl Streep will be playing activist Emmeline Pankhurst, and she’ll be joined by Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham-Carter, Romola Garai, and Ben Whishaw. Mulligan is playing Maud, the main character, and we’ll be following her into her fight to make women’s’ voices heard. In addition of being about an important event in history, Suffragette is also the first film which is allowed to film at the Houses of Parliament in the UK, which is another awesome reason to be excited. A trailer is yet to be released.
